While it is abundant in the universe, it’s usually found combined with other elements on Earth and needs to be separated before it can be used as a fuel source. This process often involves natural gas reforming or electrolysis of water—both energy-intensive processes that can produce greenhouse gases if not powered by renewable energy sources.

Despite these challenges, many experts believe that hydrogen has a crucial role to play in our future transport system. Several car manufacturers—including Toyota, Honda and Hyundai—are already producing FCEVs and have committed to further development in this area.
